GE公司的电动机保护继电器239是为保护三相交流电机防止非正常情况损坏电动机而设计，除了保护电机之外，继电器还有保护相关机械设备的特性，可以在故障发生之前报警，故障发生后，分析原因并在日常维护时，允许校正继电器的运行，通过MODBUS通讯接口，整个电厂（工厂）的电机启动器可以连接到一个中央控制监视系统进行连续的监视和快速故障诊断，每台电动机都需要一个继电器，由于相电流由电流互感器来监测，所以电动机的任何线电压可以得到保护，继电器被用作控制设备，在发生故障时使接触器或断路器断开，也就是说，它并不通过电机的一次电流，根据选定的温度选项可以监视三个RTDS，这3个RTDS可能都在定子内，也可能1个在定子内，2个在轴承上，238安装239作为电动机保护和监视设备会最大限度的减少电机停机时间。
