内存交换模板使用内存映像技术，它允许PLC之间或其它运算设备之间通过高速光纤网络进行确定性的数据共享。确定性网络允许数据在一个预设的时间周期内进行共享。该网络可以由上述产品或其它任何与VMIC 5565系列产品兼容的内存映像产品混合组成。每个设备都作为网络上的一个单独节点。每个内存映像网最多可有256个节点。任何时候只要有一个节点上的数据被改写，其它节点上的数据将会被自动更新。
网络上的每一个节点用光纤连接到一个菊链环上。第一个节点的发送器连接到第二个节点的接受器上，第二个节点上的发送器连接到第三个节点的接受器上，如此类推，直到环网完成，将最后一个节点的发送器接回到第一个节点的接受器上。
一个完整的冗余连接包括主单元上的一块RMX和一个从单元上的RMX，以及一条连接它们的高速光纤。它必须是一个两节点环：其它任何内存映像网节点都不能再联到它上面。当RMX不用做冗余连接时，它和CMX的功能相同。
